Altar Guild

The Altar Guild is a ministry of service for lay persons that offers a “behind the scenes” opportunity to assist the rector in preparing the Church and Chapel. We prepare the altar and vessels for worship. The Altar Guild sets the credence table with the elements (bread and wine) to be administered during communion. We assist the priest so that the worship services proceed smoothly and assure all the necessary items are in place for worship.

All communicants are welcome and eligible to serve. At Calvary, members work on teams and serve for four weeks throughout the year – one week in each quarter. Service requires about three hours during your designated week. Our responsibilities include preparing the altar and flowers and caring for all appointments (brass, silver, linen, and needlepoint).

Altar flowers are given as memorials and arranged by members of the Flower Guild, a subcommittee of the Altar Guild. All parishioners are welcome to participate. Demonstrated talent is not necessary and instruction is offered to develop your flower arranging skills. We also organize the decorating of the Church and Chapel for Christmas, Easter and other special celebrations.

There truly is “something for everyone” in Altar Guild work: cutting greens for use at the altar, polishing brass, folding linens, marking hymn boards, replacing candles, and overseeing the details that make our worship together so special.

Please contact Courtney Pitt or Anna Aycock, Altar Guild Co-Chairs, if you would like to explore these opportunities.
